Nylon Sheet is not only an excellent engineering plastic, it has become one of the most famous and most popular of all the engineering plastics. Nylon Sheet has excellent all round performance and although it may not be the best performer in all specification categories, Nylon Sheet is one of the great all-rounders and is a safe and dependable product. Nylon Sheet is also very easy to machine on either manual or automatic machines and with correct tools, can be produced into very intricate components with a smooth surface finish. Nylon was first invented in the early 1940's to initially produce woman's hosiery but over the years Nylon has been developed into almost every area of people's lives from carpets to toothbrushes.

Nylon 6 Sheet
Nylon 6 Sheet is probably the most popular Nylon grade in Europe and provides excellent performance. Nylon 6 Sheet has two forms of manufacturing, the first form is extruded Nylon 6 Sheet, this process is as it sounds, and the Nylon 6 is heated and is forced and extruded through rollers to produce an accurate and uniform material with good elasticity and good toughness. Extruded Nylon 6 Sheet is often the grade that thinner sheets are produced in, typically from 1mm thickness up to a usual maximum of 10mm thickness. Nylon 6 is an economical material but sometimes the extrusion process can import some stress within the sheet which can sometimes produce a Nylon Sheet that is not always perfectly flat. Another production process for Nylon Sheet is Cast Nylon Sheet. This process provides a nice easy to machine material that is more common with thicker grades from 10mm thick up to and over 120mm in thickness. As the name suggests, this Nylon Sheet is cast poured which means that the base material is heated and poured into a heated mould and gradually allowed to cool to produce a Nylon Sheet with less stress, the sheet is then annealed and then trimmed. Because of the manufacturing process of Cast Nylon 6 Sheet, the material is almost always oversize in thickness and the overall thickness can also vary across the area of the sheet. Cast Nylon Sheet is then sometimes processed though large planning machines to produce an accurate overall thickness and the sheets are planed equally on both sides to try and eliminate machining stress.

Nylon 6.6 Sheet

Nylon 6.6 is an extruded grade sheet and is very slightly less popular than other grades, Nylon 6.6 has slightly better abilities at higher operating temperatures and is slightly harder. Nylon 6.6 is moderately more expensive and is also available in a smaller range and size availability but despite its reduced size availability, Nylon 6.6 has some performance advantages that make Nylon 6.6 favoured by some engineers.

Size availability of Nylon Sheet

Nylon 6 Sheet is generally manufactured in sheet sizes of 2000 x 1000 and is often cut to sizes to best suit customer's needs. Thickness range is generally from 1mm up to and greater than 120mm.

Nylon 66 Sheet is generally manufactured in 3000mm lengths and is usually available in either 500mm wide or 610mm wide. These sheets are also cut and processed to size to again best suit customers needs. Thickness for Nylon 6.6 Sheet ranges usually from 5mm up to 100mm.

Performance additives for Nylon Sheet
Nylon Sheet can often have additives that further improve its performance such as MOS2 or Molybdenum disulphide, this is a black graphite like filler that can give a self lubrication and reduce friction to help in reducing maintenance. Special grade oil is also added to further reduce friction and improve component lifetime by a factor of over four times. Glass fibre is sometimes added to Nylon Sheet, this has the effect of increasing the rigidity of components although the glass fibre can create an abrasive surface that may wear out other mating components.

Applications for Nylon Sheet
Nylon Sheet is often used for wear blocks and strips to form a protective friction reduced layer helping improve the lifespan of components. Nylon Sheet is also used for jigs and fixtures because of its size availability and its economy over other traditional materials. Nylon Sheet can be bonded using fairly common adhesives although the grades with additives may present obvious problems. Nylon 6 and Nylon 6.6 are hydroscopic, this means that it will absorb moisture and can change the dimensions of very accurate components although this is not always critical but this is why we do not recommend Nylon Sheet for direct food contact applications.

Direct Plastics Online specialise in both Nylon 6 and Nylon 6.6 Sheet. We offer a same day dispatch and a free delivery option.
