Nylon Rod is normally specified for bearings etc as the wear and abrasion resistance is very good, it is also used for pulleys and bushes, this is because it can withstand high pressure due to its very high strength, in fact it can withstand up to one tonne per square inch. Nylon Rod is also very good for rollers and spacers. Nylon Rod is very good for applications where minimal maintenance is required or in environments where maintenance access is difficult. One area that Nylon Rod finds difficult is in damp or wet conditions where tight tolerances are also important, this is because Nylon Rod is hydroscopic which means that it will absorb moisture causing the material to expand, this may not be a problem but in tight tolerance applications this slight expansion may cause binding issues.

Nylon Rod Grade Options
The two most popular grades of Nylon Rod are Nylon 6 and Nylon 6.6, both grades are manufactured slightly differently but produce engineering plastics with very similar performance results. Nylon Rod is a very popular material for friction reducing additives that even further enhance the lifespan of a component.

One of the most popular additives for Nylon Rod is Molybdenum Disulphide or MOS² for short, this is a black graphite like dry lubricant which helps reduce friction and improve bearing life in harsh environments and where maintenance and bearing lubrications are difficult.

Special grade oil is also added to the production of Nylon Rod, these grades are normally green in colour and have been proven to reduce bearing noise, reduce friction and dramatically improve bearing life, These nylons are slightly more expensive but will prove much more cost effective in the long term.

Nylon 66 Rod Temperatures
Nylon Rod has an impressive engineering plastic with a temperature range that has a maximum short term operating temperature of plus 160°C and Nylon Rod has a long term operating temperature that is plus 100°C.

Nylon Rod Size Range
The typical commercially available range of Nylon Rod is from 4mm diameter up to around 500mm diameter, although Nylon Rod has been and is produced in much larger and impressive diameters to special order. Standard produced lengths for Nylon Rod can vary due to certain manufacturers resources and choices but in general Nylon Rod is made in 3M lengths up to approximately 150mm diameter and then can step down to either 2M lengths and then down to 1M lengths, this reduction in manufactured lengths is also a factor determined by the weight of the material.

Nylon 66 Rod is slightly better at operating at higher temperatures than Nylon 6 although the advantage is slight. Nylon 66 Rod is also slightly harder than the other grade which may help with machining and may result in a better surface finish.

Nylon 66 Rod Food Contact
We are advised by the manufacturers that Nylon 66 is compatible with food contact applications this is only extended to the natural/white and the black grade would be classed unacceptable due to the additive included to improve component wear resistance. There are other materials such as Acetal which overall may suit food applications better.
